Therapeutic Ultrasound

Therapeutic ultrasound is used to treat various soft tissue injuries, including those affecting joints and muscles experiencing spasms. Although it shares the same name as diagnostic ultrasound, this therapy utilizes different technology and serves a distinct purpose.

What is Therapeutic Ultrasound?

Therapeutic ultrasound involves the emission of high-frequency sound waves beyond the range of human hearing. When applied to targeted areas in soft tissues and joints, it generates heat that helps reduce inflammation, improve blood circulation, and alleviate pain, stiffness, and muscle spasms. It is also believed to support the body's natural healing processes.

How Does Therapeutic Ultrasound Work?

While its mechanisms and objectives differ from diagnostic ultrasound, the application process is similar. If you have previously undergone ultrasound imaging, the procedure may seem familiar.

A handheld device, often referred to as an ultrasound "wand," will be moved over your skin in the area of concern. Ultrasound gel is applied beforehand to enhance the transmission of sound waves and minimize friction. Although the therapy involves the delivery of deep tissue heat, most patients report feeling little or no discomfort during treatment.

Research indicates that therapeutic ultrasound can promote healing at the cellular level. Please contact our office today to determine if therapeutic ultrasound could be a beneficial component of your recovery plan.
